Batch Kataegis: Ready to Make Their Mark

Kataegis is a Greek word that means “thunderstorm”. In genetics, it refers to a localized hypermutation phenomenon in the genome. Instead of mutations occurring randomly across different regions, kataegis appear as clusters of hypermutations occurring close together within specific parts of the genome; often visualized as a lightning bolt striking down when mapped along the genome sequence, hence the name.



Much like this phenomenon, Batch Kataegis is not defined by a single individual but by a group whose presence becomes more meaningful when seen together. Just as clustered mutations create a visible pattern, these nine (9) individuals form a connected group whose strengths come from their shared journey, unique personalities, and diversity. 


Batch Kataegis is composed of members from different batches and degree programs. Four (4) are from Batch 2023: Marianne, from BS Biology major in Ecology, Athena from BS Biology major in Microbiology, and Shai and Mela, both BS Biology majors in Genetics. Two (2) members come from Batch 2024: Je and Titay, both from BS Agricultural Biotechnology. Completing the group are three (3) members from Batch 2025, Jen and Lorenz from BS Biology, and KD from BS Agricultural Biotechnology.


Gerry Dela Rosa Jr. (Je)

  • With a natural warmth and a genuine presence, Je knows how to make people feel comfortable the moment he is around. Just as he loves running with endurance and determination, he leads with quiet strength and inspires others through the encouragement and direction he brings.


Maria Carmela Tuibeo (Mela)

  • Wherever laughter echoes the loudest, Mela is never far behind. With her cheerful spirit and love for running and hiking, she brings the same boundless energy of the outdoors to everyone around her.


Shania Rubio (Shai)

  • With a sharp wit and a smile that speaks volume, Shai has a way of turning ordinary conversations into memorable ones. In her quiet moments, she finds comfort in journaling, where her thoughts flow as naturally as her humour.


Jennelyne Razon (Jen)

  • Even though being the youngest, Jen carries a charm that easily captures everyone’s attention. Whether she’s baking something sweet or sharing snippets of her life online, she spreads creativity and passion wherever she goes. 


Keziah Lashley Dijan (KD)

  • In moments when reliability matters most, KD is always someone you can count on. With a mind full of pop culture references and a natural rhythm for dancing, she brings both fun and dependability to the table.


Kristine Athena Ilao (Athena)

  • Athena’s outgoing nature paired with her insightful thoughts often sparks meaningful conversations. Her curiosity and love for reading inspire others to reflect, learn, and see things from different points of view.


Jahn Marianne Genova (Marianne)

  • Marianne’s lively and talkative personality naturally fills the room with laughter and energy. Her playful interests and cheerful presence make others feel comfortable, turning ordinary moments into something spectacular.


Andrea Chelsea Ty (Titay)

  • Calm yet dependable, Titay is someone the group often turns to for perspective and support. Proud of her Waray roots, she enjoys quiet moments writing down her thoughts and patiently crafting pieces with love.


Lorenz Mapote (Lorenz)

  • Creativity seems to follow Lorenz wherever he goes. With an artistic mind and different form of humor up his sleeve, he has a unique gift for brightening the room and putting smiles on the faces of those around him.
