Committed to nurturing an appreciation for the science of genetics, The UPLB Genetics Society (GeneSoc) conducted this year’s BIO 30 Quiz Contest on May 8 at the Institute of Biological Sciences Main Lecture Hall to test the mastery of Genetics concepts and challenge the minds of the students currently taking BIO 30 (Genetics). The grand event welcomed solo participants and groups of up to three members, featuring a total of 45 teams, to encourage collaboration and showcase their knowledge about the said course.
The stage was set for a fast-paced intellectual showdown with three themed rounds: Replication (easy), Transcription (average), and Translation (difficult), with questions encompassing the broad scope of BIO 30.
Guiding the competition were the esteemed judges, Asst. Prof. Argel L. Arenas and Ms. Hannah Corinne T. Cantaros, whose expertise ensured the integrity and precision of the event. The quiz contest was also hosted by the charismatic voices of the UPLB Jocks, who brought energy and excitement to every question-and-answer reveal.
As a symbolic reward for the hard work and academic excellence of the winners, they received prizes of cash and bags consisting of pieces of bluebooks, a ‘Genetics at the Population Level’ reference book, and a SEARCA 2025 calendar. Additionally, class incentives, courtesy of instructors, shall be granted to all contestants.
This year’s BIO 30 Quiz Contest stands as a testament to how competitive academic events can further deepen understanding and empower students to engage with the science of genetics beyond the usual lecture setup. As the 41st President Marion G. Magdamit, Jr., expressed during the opening remarks, this year’s quiz contest hoped that students not only apply the valuable knowledge they gained but also enjoy the event itself.
