Emerging on top against 12 participating high schools, the group of Philippine Science High School-Central Luzon Campus (PSHS-CLC) reclaimed the championship title in the 2022 Genetics Camp (GenCamp) held last March 5-6 via Zoom.
Persistent on its goal to promote the science of Genetics in the Philippines, GeneSoc held the 15th installment of GenCamp with the theme “Behind the Genes: Uncovering Hidden Patterns of Inheritance Through Genetic Counseling.”
Completing the over-all top three in this year’s GenCamp were Philippine Science High School-Western Visayas Campus (PSHS-WVC) and Philippine Science High School-CARAGA Region Campus (PSHS-CRC), both tying in the first runner up position.
Kicking-off the event on its first day, Princess Yra De Silos, the current Genetics Camp Steering Committee Head, delivered her opening remarks.
The first GeneTalk lecture was given by Dr. Eva Maria Cutiongco-de la Paz, which revolved around Precision Medicine.
Dr. Cutiongco-de la Paz is the current Executive Director of the National Institutes of Health in the University of the Philippines Manila, and the Health Program Director of the Philippine Genome Center.
After the lecture, the participants gathered in breakout rooms for the first day of laboratory activities, highlighting topics on heredity and genetic counseling.
The afternoon session transpired with the simultaneous events of Skit Contest and Research Proposal Competition (RPC).
For the skit contest, two teams were formed, which consisted of PSHS-WVC with Rizal National Science High School (RNSHS) for Team 1, and Batangas Eastern Colleges (BEC) with PSHS-CRC for Team 2.
Judges for the skit contest were Dr. Liza Cabrera, Ms. Juliet Magpantay, and Asst. Prof. Romella Beringuela.
Proceeding in the final defense round of the RPC were groups from: Batangas State University (BSU), PSHS-CLC, PSHS-CRC, PSHS-WVC, and RNSHS.
Judges for the RPC were Asst. Prof. Kristine Abenis, Asst. Prof. Marian Jean Panganiban, and Asst. Prof. Anna Mariel Toledo.
The second and final day of GenCamp 2022 was opened by Dr. Charina Gracia Banaay, the Senior Adviser of GeneSoc, through her opening remarks.
The day started with GeneTalk 2 by Dr. Maria Melanie Liberty Alcausin on the topic of Genetic Counseling. Dr. Alcausin is currently the director of the Institute of Human Genetics in the National Institutes of Health of the University of the Philippines-Philippine General Hospital.
The final lecture on GeneTalk 3 was delivered by GeneSoc Honorary Member Dr. Carmencita David-Padilla. Along with her long list of achievements and extensive background in pediatrics and genetics, Dr. David-Padilla is the current chancellor of the University of the Philippines Manila.
After starting the afternoon session with laboratory activities, the participants gathered in the main room for the last contest: GeneSoc’s Search for Young Genetics Ambassador (YGA).
16 participants from the participating schools joined the search.
Judges for YGA were Asst. Prof. Joan Christine Adajar-Deriquito, Asst. Prof. Emmanuel Galang, and Dr. Eureka Teresa Ocampo.
Asynchronous contests were also held, which include: Essay Writing Contest, Digital Poster Making Contest, and GENErate: A Breakthrough Video Contest.
