To help students prepare for their BIO 30 (Genetics) course, The UPLB Genetics Society (GeneSoc) kicked off its first tutorial session of the semester at CAS Annex 2 Multipurpose Hall 1, last September 11, 2025.
The tutorial session aimed to guide students and equip them with the knowledge needed to excel in their upcoming first exam in BIO 30. It focused on reinforcing fundamental genetics concepts and problem-solving techniques covered in the course curriculum. After the session, the organization also distributed reviewers and mock exams to further help students prepare for the upcoming examination.
Led by Sir Abdullaziz “Sam” Arcillo, the tutorial provided a comprehensive review of key genetics concepts and exercises aligned with the BIO 30 syllabus. Arcillo discussed major topics, addressed student inquiries, and shared practical tips to help participants better understand complex lessons.
The session covered topics included in the first BIO 30 examination, beginning with:
- Chapter I: Genetics: The Science of Heredity and Variation,
- Chapter II: The Chromosomal Basis of Heredity, until
- Chapter III: Gene Segregation and Interaction
Participants expressed positive feedback, noting that the tutorial was informative, helpful, and effective in clarifying major concepts for the upcoming exam. Many appreciated the lecturer’s effort in emphasizing essential topics and providing strategies to improve comprehension and exam performance. Some participants, however, shared that they hoped for a longer session duration to allow more time for discussion and additional sample problem-solving.
The tutorial was conducted in fulfillment of the organization’s objectives of promoting the science of genetics within the university. It also served as a platform for peer-assisted learning, fostering a collaborative and supportive academic environment for students.
Ms. Clara Ysabel Alumaga, the current President of GeneSoc, has mentioned that the organization will hold tutorial sessions for upcoming examinations, excluding the finals. She also shared that GeneSoc will host various activities and events throughout the semester to promote a deeper understanding and appreciation of Genetics, not only within the university but also across the Philippines. Through these initiatives, GeneSoc aims to advance the science of genetics by fostering academic excellence, collaboration, and scientific engagement among students and the wider community.
