This second semester, The UPLB Genetics Society (GeneSoc) facilitated two workshops titled “DNA-based methods of identification and taxonomy of bacteria and fungi.” These sessions introduced UPLB students to important bioinformatics tools and techniques aimed at reinforcing their foundation in microbiological research. Asst. Prof. Andrew D. Montecillo of the Microbiology Division (MCBD), also a GeneSoc alumnus (from Batch Diploid), led these hands-on tutorials.
The first event was held on March 21 from 9:00 to 11:00 AM at the IBS Biocomputing Laboratory (E-213). It was organized in partnership with the University of the Philippines Los Baños, the Institute of Biological Sciences, and BioAssets Corporation. There were a total of 25 attendees—17 undergraduate students and two MCBD faculty members onsite and six via Zoom.
Following its initial success, the workshop was relaunched as part of the BIO 30 Week, themed “Geneoculate: Decoding the Algorithm and Blueprint of Life Using Microorganisms.” The second installment took place on May 7, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM, at the same venue. This session was attended by 18 participants—14 undergraduate students and four graduate students from various fields. This event was made possible in collaboration with IBS.
These workshops aim to equip young scientists and students with foundational knowledge and skills in bioinformatics—giving a spotlight to the growing importance of DNA-based technologies.
With the enthusiastic turnout at these events, the UPLB Genetics Society looks forward with excitement to offering more educational sessions in the future, continuing its strong commitment to promoting the science of Genetics in the country.
