IBS @39; Pleto, Lado awarded as outstanding researchers

With the theme “Forging Leaders in Biological Education, Research, and Public Service,” the Institute of Biological Sciences (IBS) of the University of the Philippines Los Banos celebrated its 39th anniversary last March 23 and 28.

IBS kicked-off the two-day celebration by recognizing its outstanding and retiring faculty and staff, which was held in the UPCO Social Hall last March 23.

Among the institute’s faculty awardees were GeneSoc alumni Asst. Prof John Vincent R. Pleto (Replisome) as IBS Outstanding Researcher (Junior Level), and Asst. Prof. Jickerson P. Lado (Integrons) as IBS Outstanding Researcher (Senior Level).

Pleto is also among the members of the Seven Lakes Assessment and Monitoring Project, which is awarded as the 2022 IBS Outstanding Research Program, along with other professors and researchers led by IBS Director Vachel Gay Paller.

Pleto is currently an assistant professor at the Environmental Biology Division of IBS. Lado is currently the Assistant to the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, the current director of the office of scholarship and grants, and an assistant professor at the Genetics and Molecular Biology Division of IBS.

Included among the retirees was GeneSoc’s former Junior and Senior Adviser and former IBS Director Dr. Meryln S. Mendioro (Honorary Member).

IBS also honored its faculty and staff who had served the university for at least 20 years.

GeneSoc’s Junior Adviser Prof. Ivy Amor F. Lambio and Senior Adviser Dr. Charina Gracia B. Banaay, who both rendered 20 years of service in the Environmental Biology Division of IBS, were also awarded.

On its second and final day on March 28, IBS hosted a fireside chat event with the institute’s esteemed graduates. Included in these conversations with the alumni is one of GeneSoc’s charter members and Balik Scientist, Dr. Leodevico Ilag.
