Batch Zisupton: From the blues and into the Blue

By Aimee B. Montes (Isochore)

A new addition to the superfamilies of DNA transposons, Zisuptons were found to be active in fish and could also be detected in various types of organisms. The term Zisupton is shorthand for “Zinc finger SUMO protease transposon”. It is from the class 2 of transposable elements that contain nucleic acid and protein-binding domains. With its ability to regulate gene expression, this transposon could potentially contribute to genomic diversity and evolution, not only in fish, but also in other organisms.

As novel and fresh Zisupton is, two new outstanding individuals dived into the gene pool as well: Jeriel Cabaluna, a BS Agricultural Biotechnology student, and Maria Ylenna Notorio, a BS Biology student, both from batch 2018. Get to know more about the distinct personalities these two have and how they think their GeneSoc journey would be like.

Jeriel Cabaluna

Born on the 11th of August, 1999 in Caloocan City, Jeriel describes himself as someone who always tries to do his best in everything even if he already lost hope. He loves to watch various videos on Youtube; vlogs, informative ones, will surely entertain him. Back in high school, he was a choir member of Himig Scientia, and his classification was Bass 2. He loves singing, but pop songs don't usually fit his low-ranged voice. In the future, he wants to be a doctor, and a Youtuber as well. He wishes that he would be able to handle tough situations in life by being more mature. Personally, he feels that it's okay to cry sometimes, knowing that it's just a phase and not a life sentence.

Maria Ylenna Notorio

Enna was born and raised in Navotas City. She spent her primary and secondary education in a Catholic school just a few steps away from their home. She describes herself as soft-hearted, fun-loving, and a ball of happiness that sees the good in everything and in everyone. She has a ceaseless passion for dance and music; in fact, she is currently a trainee of the University's dance varsity, SJDC. She loves the sea and she always makes sure to try different water sports when she gets the chance to do so. She aspires to become a medical doctor and a member of the Doctors to the Barrios in the future. Joining Genesoc made her realize that there are skills that she lacks still.

Grow with the organization; this is what the newest and youngest batch of GeneSoc aims to achieve. They aspire to be better by embodying the lessons and the essence of the organization, such as building closer relationships, educating people, and promoting excellence in everything--whenever and wherever.
