OUT OF THE GENE POOL AND INTO THE WORLD: 23 GRADUATES FROM GENESOC, 5 LAUDES AND 1 MS

On June 22, 2019 (Saturday), 22 members and an alumnus of the UPLB Genetics Society marched while wearing their sablays as UPLB held its 47th Commencement Exercises. This ends the journey of these men and women in the university, and heralds the beginning of a new story for them as they enter the next stage of their lives.


Of the 23 graduating Genes, all but two has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology, them being Jeremi Abenido (Phagemids), who has a degree in BS Agriculture Major in Agronomy specializing in Plant Breeding, and the other being Jerice Monge (Allozyme) who graduated with an MS degree in Molecular Biology and Biotechnology.


Among the BS Biology graduates, nine of them had majors in Cell and Molecular Biology, namely: Bianca Isabel Redondo (Casposons), Carl Joshua Bote (Cyclosome), Hedaya Angli (Replichore), Cherlstin Grace E. Balisi (Replichore), Regina G. Lapuz (Replichore), Edzel S. Evallo (Replichore), Jim Allen P.  Diezon (Replichore), Louise Jan Lopez (Replichore), and Lady Rose Ricel A. Montano (Helitron).


Six had majors in Genetics, namely: Noelle Ann Mercado (Hybrizyme), Michelia Merrill Linne D. Malabrigo (Hybrizyme), Sean Lemuel L. Santos (Hybrizyme), Freeman M. Mago (Replichore), Renald James Legaspi (Polintons), and lastly Francis M. Dagatan (Isochore). It is notable to mention that among the Genetics majors, those that graduated with Latin honors are all from GeneSoc.


The remaining BS Biology graduates are: Marlyn Ana Amante (Phagemids), Maria Liabel Peña (Casposons), Bianca Therese de Padua (Hybrizyme), and Marlon Rex J. Tan (Helitron), all of whom had majors in Microbiology. While Ahllyzzia Irish A. Montifar (Hybrizyme), and James Raphael Medrano (Replichore) had majors in Zoology.


Top Performing Genes of Class 2019


Five of the graduating Genes were awarded Latin honors, one of whom was a magna cum laude: Sean Lemuel Santos who claimed not only this honor, but also of being the IBS Valedictorian. While Michelia Merrill Linne Malabrigo, Bianca Therese de Padua, Renald James Legaspi, and Francis Dagatan graduated as cum laudes.

BS Biology - Major in Genetics
In 2015, Sean was ranked 1st in the Top Outstanding Students in IBS, and 2nd in the Top Outstanding Students in CAS for the sophomore level. In 2018, he was awarded as the CAS Most Outstanding Student. He is also the recipient of the 2019 BPI-DOST Science Award, and also of the UP Presidential Undergraduate Scholarship. He has also been nominated for the Outstanding Student Leader Award 2019 and for the Ten Outstanding Students of the Philippines (Regional Level). Sean is the IBS Valedictorian, as well as the UPLB and CAS Salutatorian of Class 2019. He has served as the Editor-in-Chief for GENEWS, the official publication of the organization, for two consecutive terms from 2017 to 2019. Sean is a passer of the UP Manila MD-PhD Program, where only a select few individuals are accepted each year, and where he will live the next part of his life.


Michelia Merrill Linne D. Malabrigo, cum laude
BS Biology - Major in Genetics
Michelia was awarded the 2019 Best Undergraduate Thesis in Genetics. She has been a vital part of the organization during her stay, being assigned to positions of importance like the Outreach Committee Head in the A.Y. 2017-2018 and President in the A.Y. 2018-2019. For her plans in the future, she will be studying Doctor of Medicine at the UP College of Medicine.


Bianca Therese de Padua, cum laude
BS Biology - Major in Microbiology
Aside from being a member of the UPLB Genetics Society, Bianca was also a member of UP Silakbo. Unsure of her future plans, Bianca may delve into research or try her hand at teaching. But first and foremost, she wants to fulfill her role as an Iskolar ng Bayan by serving the country and people that has helped scholars like herself.


Renald James Legaspi, cum laude
BS Biology - Major in Genetics
Renald was awarded the DOST SEI Medal of Excellence. He has fulfilled numerous roles in the organization, one of which being the Education 3 Committee Head for the 9th National Intercollegiate Genetics Quiz Contest. For his plans after college, Renald wants to contribute to national agriculture development, and pursue PhD studies in the field of genetics or animal science.


Francis M. Dagatan, cum laude
BS Biology - Major in Genetics
Francis is also an active member of the UPLB Grange Association and a volunteer for the UPLB Ugnayan ng Pahinungod. He plans to attend medical school at St. Luke’s Medical Center College of Medicine after he graduates. In addition to medicine, he is also interested in the field of endocrinology.

The 47th Commencement Exercises of UPLB was held on June 22, 2019 at the Upper Baker Field from 4:00pm to 9:00pm.
