GeneSoc takes part in University and IBS Freshman Activities

           For the upperclassmen, August marks the start of another semester of college drama involving bags of academic workloads and surprise quizzes. For the freshmen, it is the beginning of unexpected friendships and knowledge unheard of.

            On August 6, the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) opened its arms to a new batch of freshman students by preparing various activities for them with the help of different student organizations. Among these organizations, The UPLB Genetics Society (GeneSoc) participated in the warm welcome of the new Iskolars ng Bayan.

AlmOSAlan 2018

            As early as 6 o’clock in the morning last August 7, 2018 (Tuesday), the Copeland Gymnasium was already bustling with activity for the annual AlmOSAlan. From hotdogs on sticks to rice on paper plates, a variety of foods was prepared for the freshman students by the participating student organizations. GeneSoc took part in the said activity by giving emergency number card, and by offering chocolate drinks and hot pandesal.

IBS Freshman Orientation

            Later in the afternoon, the Institute of Biological Sciences (IBS) held the Freshman Orientation at IBSLH Main which teemed with new BS Biology students. Dr. Merlyn Mendioro, the IBS Director, gave the welcome address. This was followed by the presentation of IBS and College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) videos. Then, the CAS Policies was explained by the College Secretary, Prof. Ivan Marcelo Duka, while the BS Biology Curriculum was explained Prof. Joseph San Pascual. Finally, Dr. Lucille Villegas, the IBS Deputy Director, gave the closing remarks.

IBS Freshman Tour

            After the orientation, the volunteers from various IBS organizations were tasked with one of the six blocs (B2, F1, U1, U2, W1, and WX1) of freshmen for the IBS Freshman Tour. Of the six blocs, U1 was entrusted under the care of GeneSoc volunteer members. The tour is comprised of nine stations situated at places where most of the freshmen’s classes will be held. These include the CAS Bldg., PhySci Bldg., CAS Annex 2, NCAS, and Wings A, B, C, and D of IBS. Each station has its own game which tested the creativity and knowledge of the freshmen students. After the tour, all the blocs were gathered for a grand photo opportunity and short video of freshmen shouting, “One IBS!”

IBS Acquaintance Party
            On August 15, IBS held an acquaintance party for BS Biology freshies at CAS Annex 2 MPH 1. Numerous IBS orgs worked together and volunteered for the program. GeneSoc was one of the orgs who catered food to the freshmen. The event was kicked-off by Prof. Jickerson P. Lado and Prof. Ronilo Flores who both hosted the acquaintance. Prof. Faith Maranan welcomed the freshmen with her opening remarks. Then, the introduction of professors of IBS was held wherein each professor shared what they teach and what they do outside the classroom. Next, IBS orgs were introduced by their respective members wherein a cheer is made afterwards. GeneSoc chanted the ‘Puso at Talino’ cheer during this activity. Games were also held to stimulate the interaction between freshmen. Prof. Evangeline Pascual gave the closing remarks.
