LOS BAÑOS, LAGUNA–Two GeneSoc members recently made it to the shortlist of newly accepted applicants for the MD-PhD program of the University of the Philippines College of Medicine (UPCM), one of the most prestigious medical schools in the country. The announcement came in last June 29, 2018.

Rozel B. Razal (Aptamers) and Joana Marie C. Cruz (Cyclosome) were among the ten individuals who were chosen for the MD-PhD Program, an eight-year medical study program that gears candidates toward research in the medical field.

Rozel and Joana both graduated this year as magna cum laude in the University of the Philippines-Los Banos with a degree in BS Biology Major in Cell and Molecular Biology. In the Academic Year 2017-2018, Rozel and Joana served as the President and the Education Committee Head, respectively, of The UPLB Genetics Society.

The MD-PhD program is being offered in the country solely by UPCM. In the MD-PhD curriculum, the first year is dedicated to research and coursework. The next five years is the medical proper and the last two years is allotted to PhD dissertation. Full scholarship is given to MD-PhD candidates.

Acceptance to the program requires an applicant to first be accepted to UPCM. Afterwards, an extensive orientation and interview will be conducted for those who are interested to enter the program. Ten individuals will then be chosen among the pool of MD-PhD applicants.

Aside from Joana and Rozel, two other GeneSoc members, Rochelle “Rochi” Sarmiento (Polylinker) and Faith Tambalo (Cyclosome) were also among those who qualified for UPCM.

Rochi graduated in 2017 as cum laude with a degree in BS Biology-Major in Genetics while Faith graduated in 2018 with a degree in BS Biology-Major in Microbiology in UPLB. During their stay in the organization, Rochi served as the Public Relations Committee Head (A.Y. 2016-2017) while Faith was appointed as the Education 2 Committee Head (A.Y. 2017-2018) in the organization’s “Genetics Camp 2018” event.
