GenCamp 2018 eyes to raise awareness on Antimicrobial Resistance

By: Joana Marie C. Cruz (Cyclosome)

The Genetics Camp (GenCamp) 2018, on its 13th installment, aims to boost youth’s awareness on antimicrobial resistance (AMR), one of the growing threats in public health.

With the theme, "Conquering PathoGENES: Battle Against Antibiotic Resistance for Health and Immunity”, GenCamp 2018 will focus on the root causes of antimicrobial resistance and the possible ways to combat its effects.

“Effective antibiotics have been one of the pillars allowing us to live longer, live healthier, and benefit from modern medicine. Unless we take significant actions to improve efforts to prevent infections and also change how we produce, prescribe and use antibiotics, the world will lose more and more of these global public health goods and the implications will be devastating,” remarked Dr Keiji Fukuda, the World Health Organization (WHO) Assistant Director-General for Health Security.

Fukuda added that without urgent, coordinated action by many stakeholders, the world would be headed for a post-antibiotic era, in which common infections and minor injuries which have been treatable for decades can once again kill.

With these alarming threats, GenCamp 2018 intends to empower the youth to be involved in the actions on alleviating this global problem by raising awareness through conducting activities and seminars about Microbial Genetics, Antimicrobial Resistance, AMR Surveillance Program and Sustainable Developmental Goals.

Some of the activities that will be conducted are the Inter-High School Quiz Contest, Essay Writing Contest, Poster-and-Slogan Making Contest, Debate, Extemporaneous Speaking Contest, Amazing Race, Effective Teaching Seminar, laboratory activities and the Search for the Young Genetics Ambassador.

GenCamp 2018 is endorsed by the Department of Education (DepEd) under DepEd Advisory No. 013, s. 2018. It will be held on March 9-11 at the University of the Philippines РLos Ba̱os, Laguna.

The three-day camp will be brought to you by The UPLB Genetics Society, with media coverage of ClickTheCity and WhenInManila. The event is also sponsored by DIAMED Enterprise and Mongol Pencil Company.

Registration period for Genetics Camp 2018 is extended until Feb 14.
