Last February 28, 2014, the Philippine Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology launched its Southern Luzon Chapter (PSBMB-SL) during the 7th UPLB Molecular Biology and Biotechnology Symposium at the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB).  PSBMB-SL is one of the five chapters of PSBMB together with North Luzon, Central Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao Chapter.

The chapter launch was highlighted by a seminar of PSBMB President John Donnie A. Ramos on “Molecular Allergology: Understanding the Pathogenesis of Allergies among Filipinos”. Immediate Past President Dr. Gracia Fe Uy introduced the Society to the participants with a presentation on the history and thrusts of PSBMB.

Pres. JDA Ramos inducted into office three of the chapter officers who were present during the event. Dr. Roberta N. Garcia (UPLB) served as the Interim President, while Dr. Ma. Genaleen Q. Diaz from the Institute of Biological Sciences, College of Arts and Science, UP Los Baños and Prof. Ma. Cristina Francesca T. Dimaculangan of the De La Salle University Lipa are the chapter auditor and treasurer, respectively.  The other officers of the PSBMB-SL are Dr. Lucy Estioko (Vice-President, Bicol University), Dr. Eureka Teresa M. Ocampo (Secretary, UPLB), and Dr. Mary Ann O. Torio, (PRO, UPLB). On July 30, 2014, Dr. Orlex B. Yllano of the Adventist University of the Philippines (AUP) assumed the presidency of the PSBMB-SL Chapter.

The PSBMB, formerly known as the Philippine Biochemistry Society (PBS) was established in August 1973 by a group of biochemistry educators to foster the development of biochemistry in the country. The change from the name PBS  to PSBMB in 1993 signified the integration of molecular biology as a closely related science.  The Society’s membership is open to all persons holding at least a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry, chemistry, biology, pharmacy, medicine, and other related disciplines and who are active in teaching and/or research in biochemistry and/or related fields. The society has sponsored annual conventions, seminars, workshops on concepts/principles, advances, laboratory techniques, teaching techniques, and aids, applications of biochemistry, and molecular biology in different parts of the country

The PSBMB is a member of the Federation of Asian and Oceanian Biochemists and Molecular Biologists (FAOBMB). It is also the Philippine representative to the International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (IUBMB).

The UPLB Genetics Society wishes all the best to alumna Dr. Ma. Genaleen Diaz (F1), honorary members Dr. Ma. Corazon de Ungria and Dr. Carmencita Padilla, and the newly formed PSBMB-Southern Luzon Chapter.
